M.Sc. Opportunity in Northern Hydrometeorology

The northern hydrometeorology group ( at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada invites applications for an opening for a 2-year fully-funded Masters of Science (M.Sc.) degree starting in September 2021. 

Project Description: As western Canada’s glaciers continue to retreat and as snow accumulation and ablation patterns change in response to regional and amplified altitudinal warming, there will also be hydrological responses that will impact ecosystems, communities, hydroelectric generation and irrigation, amongst others. Thus there is an urgent need to quantify the changing contributions of glaciers and snowpacks to runoff generation in the principal watersheds of western Canada. As these basins remain poorly monitored, especially at higher elevations, it remains unknown how much meltwater from seasonal snowpacks and glaciers contribute to their flows. Warm air temperatures may also change the seasonality of flows, with the likelihood of enhanced flows in winter, an earlier spring freshet followed by an amplified summer recession and reduced flows. In this project, we will make use of a suite of Variable Infiltration Capacity with Glacier Dynamics (VIC-GL) model simulations being developed at the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium to project future cryospheric and hydrological changes across latitudinal and elevational gradients across western Canada. Research will explore how amplified warming at high latitudes/altitudes affects future projected streamflow with a focus on timing of hydrological events (e.g. freshets, low flows). The potential future hydrological impacts of landfalling atmospheric rivers on the hydrology of coastal British Columbia watersheds will also be explored.

Application Process: We invite applications for a M.Sc. position, with the preferred applicants having a comprehensive knowledge of cold regions hydrometeorology and climate, and excellent computational, programming, R statistical data analysis, GIS and communication skills.
