Job Details

Physical and Dynamic Meteorology Program Officer

The Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks rotator candidates for the position of program director for the Physical and Dynamic Meteorology (PDM) program.  Please refer to a newly-released Dear Colleague Letter from NSF that serves as an announcement of opportunity to become a program director through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA).  IPA rotators come to NSF on temporary (1-4 year) assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff.  The responsibilities of the NSF Program Director include long-range planning and budget development for the program, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, the preparation of press releases, feature articles and material describing advances in the research supported, and coordination and partnership with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations.  The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US.  Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional research and mentoring.  IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual.

The candidate would ideally start in the Summer or early Fall 2021 time period.  Official application materials should be submitted per the instructions in the Dear Colleague Letter (https://beta.nsf.gov/careers/openings/geo/ags/ags-2021-2089).  Questions about the position can be directed to Nick Anderson, program director in PDM (nanderso@nsf.gov).  Applications received prior to April 19th, 2021 will be prioritized.  NSF is an equal opportunity employer.
