Assistant Professor in Sustainability and Human-Earth System Interactions

The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for one tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Sustainability and Human-Earth System Interactions to start in September 2021 or January 2022. We invite outstanding candidates in the fields of sustainable use of resources and energy, climate change, land-atmosphere-ocean interactions, land use and/or food systems. Candidates with expertise in one of the following are particularly encouraged to apply: systems thinking and modeling, data mining and analytics, machine learning and/or high-speed computing, remote sensing, and field experimentation.
 
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Earth system science, sustainability, or a related discipline, and must demonstrate strong potential to establish and maintain substantial research, teaching, and service, including the ability to publish refereed publications, obtain competitive external grants, and supervise research students.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated capability of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as academic management and leadership.
  • Applicants must have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion which should be reflected in the candidate’s approach to teaching and research activities.

The Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences:
The Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences has 9 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 1 full-time teaching faculty member, and several adjunct instructors serving nearly 150 BS students and 30 MS and PhD students. It offers BS degrees in Environmental Science (traditional and Geoscience options) and Atmospheric Science/Meteorology. It offers an MS in Environmental Studies and is in the approval process for a PhD in Earth Systems Science. Sustainability is a major strategic priority of the University and the department currently offers a minor in Climate Change and Sustainability and is developing both a BA and an MS in Sustainability. 
 
The department has experienced substantial growth with a 50% increase in undergraduate enrollments and over 75% increase in graduate enrollment over the last five years. The department faculty has secured external research funding from multiple federal agencies such as NSF, NASA, NOAA, as well as private organizations and foundations. The department takes a leadership role in the Climate Change Initiative, a cross-disciplinary Research Center that brings together more than 30 faculty members from 13 academic departments committed to addressing climate change in their scholarly, instructional, and engagement work.
