Purpose:

 

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for an Environmental Informatics professional in its Earth Sciences Informatics portfolio. You will help link advanced informatics and computer science to data management and distribution in the Earth, climate, and environmental sciences.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 

You will be involved with software development, systems and data operations that support Environmental Data Science at ORNL, such as the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Data Center and other projects within the Earth System Informatics and Data Discovery Section.

 

We are seeking a self-starter, willing to develop expertise in advanced data tools development and data flow software operations. The following skills and experience are desirable:

 

Qualifications Required:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Strong background in real-world computer programming, as applied to science applications
  • Minimum of 2 years of web interface and data portal development using modern web architecture
  • Strong knowledge in modern programming languages such as Java frameworks, Python and Javascript
  • Strong knowledge in frameworks such as D3.js, ExpressJS, and Node.js
  • Strong professional experience in Java 7/8, Spring Boot, Web services, and Python
  • Experience in working in a DEV/OPS environment and a solid understanding of source control using Git or a similar version control system
  • Experience in big data technologies such as Cassandra, Spark, GraphQL or others
  • Familiarity with High Performance Computing (HPC) is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Desire to learn and adopt new tools and technologies as required by the projects
