University Professor of Atmospheric Dynamics with a focus on Theoretical Meteorology and the Middle Atmosphere

Salary grade: W3 or equivalent
Reference code: W3Atmosphärendynamik

The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of atmospheric dynamics. The research focus of the professorship is the middle atmosphere, mainly in the development and use of theory-based methods and numerical models. In teaching, the main focus will lie in theoretical meteorology.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate outstanding research achievements in the field of the middle atmosphere with a methodological focus on the development and application of theoretical concepts and numerical modelling. In addition, candidates should have a prestigious, international teaching profile at university level in the field of theoretical meteorology, and demonstrable experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects, especially joint research projects. Candidates must have excellent knowledge of German or English and be able to teach in the respective language.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

A key task will be the development of a promising, internationally visible and third-party funded research program with one or more of the following focal points:

(i) Theory of stratospheric dynamics and coupling with the troposphere

(ii) Chemistry-climate modelling with focus on the stratosphere

(iii) The role of the stratosphere in the predictability of weather and climate

(iv) Transport processes in the middle atmosphere

The new professor will be expected to teach in the field of theoretical meteorology as part of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in meteorology, and will also teach in the new international master’s degree program “Climate Change and Impacts.” The role will involve close cooperation with other working groups at the Institute of Meteorology, the Department of Earth Sciences, and the Geo.X network as well as contributing to other national and international research projects. As the appointee is expected to offer courses in German and English candidates must have a keen interest in acquiring the adequate language skills within a period of three years from the date of employment. They will also be expected to teach courses in ways that are sensitive to gender and diversity issues. Applications must be accompanied by the usual documents: a CV, a comprehensive research and teaching statement, references, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English, a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught and evidence of teaching competence. Please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research endeavors, joint research projects, externally funded projects and, if necessary, language certificates. If applicable, please give information on partnerships with industry, inventions/patents, and spin-offs.

All materials, including a private postal and email address, must be received no later than April 29th, 2021 preferably electronically. Please indicate the reference code for the position when you submit your materials in one PDF file (maximum 5 MB), to the following address.
