Associate Professor in Structural Geology and Tectonics
The Faculty of Earth Sciences (FES) in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland seeks to fill a tenure-track position in the field of structural geology and tectonics.
We seek an individual with an outstanding track-record in research and a great potential for establishing a world-class research program as well as excellent teaching of structural geology and tectonics.
Field of work
- Teaching in undergraduate and graduate geology courses, including subjects on structural geology and tectonics and related fields.
- Establish a vigorous, externally funded research program, publish scholarly work, and advise graduate and undergraduate students.
- Lead teaching and work of students in structural geology in the field and promote the increased interest of future geoscientists in acquiring basic knowledge as well as mastering the state-of-the-art methods in structural geology.
- Establish international high-quality collaborative projects in structural geology and tectonics with reference to Iceland's geology. These projects should preferably focus on understanding brittle structures, faulting, dike emplacement and tectonics in basalt-dominated volcanic successions.
- The research program should preferably combine high-quality fieldwork on structures and modelling of the physical processes that give rise to those structures.
• Ph.D. degree in Geology/Earth Sciences/Geophysics with focus on structural geology and tectonics
• Broad research background within structural geology and tectonics
• Demonstrated ability to obtain funding for and lead research projects
• Cooperative skills and experience of working in cross-disciplinary teams
• Good communicational and interpersonal skills
• Experience in the university academic environment and ability to form research relations
• Strong background in fieldwork on geological structures as well as knowledge of the mechanical and physical principles that control brittle deformation and modelling of such processes is an asset.

The successful applicant’s starting date is in January 2022 or according to agreement.
Salary will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Union of University Teachers and the Minister of Finance.

Applicants must clearly indicate which of their publications they regard as most significant with respect to the advertised position (no more than six publications should be selected). Applicants must send only these most significant publications with their application or indicate where they are accessible in electronic form. When more than one author has produced a publication, the applicant must account for his or her own contribution to the work. Applicants are also expected to include peer-evaluations of their teaching and administrative work, as appropriate.

In accordance with Article 38 of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009, the rector may promote a new employee to the position of full professor if the individual in question meets requirements.
The initial appointment will be for five years with a possibility of a permanent contract at the end of this period, cf. paragraph 3, Article 31 of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.
Processing of applications, evaluation of applicants' competence and hiring shall be in accordance with the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions no. 85/2008 and the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.

The professor will be based at the Institute of Earth Sciences where academic staff, including early stage researchers and graduate students conduct national and international research projects in diverse fields of Earth sciences, including several fields of volcanology, geophysics, deformation, seismology, petrology, petrochemistry, Quaternary geology, sedimentology, physical geology and geography, aqueous geochemistry, weathering and alteration, glaciology and oceanography.
