Located in Boulder, Colorado, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) serves and participates in a collaborative community of researchers and educators who are dedicated to understanding the atmosphere -- the air around us -- and the complex processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun’s core. University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) is a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) that manages NCAR on behalf of the National Science Foundation. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a world-class center leading, promoting and facilitating innovation in the atmospheric and related Earth and Sun systems sciences. Established in 1960 by the National Science Foundation, composed of seven labs with expertise in multiple fields of Earth system sciences, NCAR provides the university community with world-class facilities and services that are beyond the reach of any individual institution.

UCAR Community Programs (UCP) provides a suite of innovative resources, tools, and services to researchers, educators, and practitioners in the Earth system science community. Activities include training weather forecasters, firefighters, and emergency managers to supporting a constellation of atmosphere-observing satellites. UCP also develops internship programs and educational resources, provides real-time data and software analysis tools, and manages projects and staffing for scientific programs across the country and around the world.

What You Will Do:

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Information Technology, and deployed to the UCP Director, this position serves as the primary contact, conduit, and interface between Enterprise IT (Office of the CIO) and UCP. Position will be responsible for understanding all the IT services that can be brought to bear on behalf of UCP, for communicating the availability of situation-appropriate services to UCP Leadership when the right context arises, for communicating to IT Leadership all the activities taking place within UCP that include an IT component, and for ensuring that the right IT resources are available for use by UCP when needed. Position serves as a strategic, tactical, and technical consultant and advisor to UCP Leadership, Centers, and Programs. Position is responsible for ensuring the satisfaction of UCP with respect to IT services.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a comprehensive familiarity and understanding of the IT services available across the organization, as well as a comprehensive understanding of how those services can be brought to bear on behalf of UCP. Serves UCP as a definitive source of information about IT capabilities, policies, processes, procedure, plans, and future direction.
  • Maintains a comprehensive familiarity and understanding of the current-and-planned administrative, strategic, research, scientific, and mission-facing activities taking place within UCP, with an emphasis on any IT-related needs related to those activities. Ensures that IT Leadership is prepared to deploy resources to serve UCP’s needs as they arise.
  • Key member of the leadership team for Enterprise IT, reporting to the Deputy Director of IT. Advocates for IT positions, services, projects, and functions that benefit UCP.  Identifies resource needs and works creatively on the team to solve problems, develop strategies, and adjust priorities across the division, managing to schedules and budgets, and meeting the unit objectives and organizational mission.
  • Maintains a strong positive relationship with the UCP Director, the UCP Leadership Team, with all Center and Program leaders within UCP, and with all distributed IT staff within UCP.
  • Facilitates adoption of Enterprise IT services by UCP leadership, and by UCP Centers and Programs. Facilitates compliance with UCAR’s information security policies by UCP leadership, and by UCP Centers and Programs.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or computer-related field, or equivalent work experience. 
  • 5 years of progressive experience in support of enterprise-scale infrastructure and platforms.
  • 5 or more years’ experience working with organizational leaders and leadership teams.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Business Relationship Management.

  • Expert knowledge of operating systems and networks. Extensive experience in virtual based server environments with high availability configurations.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with integrated systems, and with integrations.
  • Experience developing appropriate policies, procedures, and service level agreements for enterprise services.
  • Expert problem-solving, project management, and time management skills.
  • Expert skill in all aspects of life-cycle maintenance.
  • Expert skill in troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated skill in working across organizational boundaries.
  • Capable of adapting to a constantly changing environment.
