Job Details

The Faculty of Science seeks an outstanding candidate for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Applied Data Science for an anticipated start date of September 1, 2021 or later. The Applied Data Science position may be appointed in any of the departments in the Faculty of Science (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geological Science, Mathematics and Statistics, or Physics and Astronomy).

The applicant must possess a PhD in a Data Science-related discipline at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of a track record of impactful publications in high quality journals and conferences. The successful applicant needs to contribute to the Faculty's innovative teaching and research initiatives, including our highly successful professional graduate programs in Data Science & Analytics.

The successful applicant must have demonstrated expertise in the latest big data processing approaches, data analysis, information presentation and visualization, machine learning, cloud computing, or distributed processing of sensors and computational devices.

The candidate must have strong interests in multi-disciplinary approaches in exploring artificially intelligent systems as partners to augment scientific inquiries, support innovative exploration of ideas, and investigate how smart technologies, data science, and artificial intelligence can be used to benefit our society and help solve scientific, social, and environmental challenges.

In addition to demonstrating evidence of data science research, the candidate must also be able to demonstrate evidence of having applied research in at least one of the following fields: computer science, mathematics; geological sciences; natural, social or medical sciences; engineering; architecture; education; art & design; law; business or financial technologies. The successful applicant can be appointed into any of the departments in the Faculty of Science.

The candidate must have strong interests in supporting the Faculty of Science's Data Science research initiatives and training programs, which we offer in partnership with the Cumming School of Medicine and the Haskayne School of Business. The candidate is expected to contribute to the University of Calgary’s Growth through Focus strategy to promote transdisciplinary scholarship and innovation and empower our students and communities to tackle society’s big problems. The candidate’s teaching obligations will be primarily in our professional graduate Data Science & Analytics programs.
