In a joint appointment procedure („Berliner Modell“) with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Technische Universität Berlin’s Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation Science at Faculty VI – Planning, Building Environment – is appointing a

University Professorship – salary grade W2 in “Applied Planetary Geodesy”.

Working field: The position includes the management of the Planetary Geodesy department at the DLR Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin-Adlershof. The successful candidate will teach the subject of Applied Planetary Geodesy at the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation Science, with a reduced teaching load of two course hours per week. Through the work carried out at DLR, the obligation to conduct research at TU Berlin shall be deemed fulfilled.
The DLR Institute of Planetary Research is concerned with research into the planets, moons and small bodies of our solar system, as well as extrasolar planets. The focus is on scientific questions concerning the formation, development and habitability of planets and moons. DLR furthermore aims to develop an understanding of dynamic processes in the solar system. The Institute participates in international scientific planetary missions headed by ESA, NASA and JAXA (including the Mars Express, ExoMars, Bepi Colombo, JUICE, and MMX missions).
Within the scope of this position, scientific activities shall focus on orbit modeling and the determination of the sizes, shapes, rotations and gravitational fields of planets, moons, asteroids and comets, as well as on the investigation of the relationships and physical implications arising in this context.

Requirements: Fulfillment of the appointment requirements pursuant to Section 100 of the Berlin State Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerlHG). This includes a university degree in engineering or natural sciences, a strong aptitude for research demonstrated by an outstanding doctorate, additional scientific achievements (Habilitation or equivalent) as well as teaching as demonstrated by a teaching portfolio (for further information, see TU Berlin website quick access 144242).

The position requires a scientist who has appropriate knowledge and experience in one, or several, of the following scientific topics:

  • definition and realization of planetary reference systems;
  • methods for obtaining figure and surface models and for developing map production from image data;
  • performance of measurements and evaluation of data from laser altimeters to determine physical planetary parameters;
  • determination and modeling of the orbits of planets, moons, asteroids and comets.

Furthermore, the successful candidate should be able to lead larger research groups and organize complex projects. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds as well as national and international experience in project work and management are expected. The successful candidate is expected to be capable of heading a department of around 20 staff members and must possess the requisite skills for the advancement of junior researchers and women, as well as skills in the area of ensuring gender equality and diversity. As an internationally renowned university, we require a very good command of English and expressly welcome applications from non-German speaking academics willing to learn German in the near future.
