The Faculty of Science at the University of Tübingen, Department of Geosciences, announces the opening of a new position:

Near Surface Geophysics Professorship (W3) as part of a cluster hire inTerrestrial Geo-Biosphere Interactions

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Tübingen, Germany, seeks to fill the following position:

Professor (W3) of Near-Surface Geophysics (Geophysik der nahen Erdoberfläche)

as part of a cluster hire of four professors in the field of Terrestrial Geo-Biosphere interactions. The other cluster hire professorships are in the areas of Climatology and the Biosphere, Terrestrial Sedimentology, and Geo-Biosphere Interactions. The chosen candidate for the professorship on Near-Surface Geophysics (broadly defined) is expected to conduct hypothesis-driven and process-oriented research in the application of subsurface, ground and/or remote sensing observations of geophysical fields used to quantify plot- to global-scale processes. Preference will be given to candidates who link their research to existing department strengths in geosciences, applied and environmental geosciences, geoecology, geography, and biology-related University units such as the Institute for Ecology and Evolution; and the Center for Molecular and Plant Biology (ZMBP). Connections are also desirable to current University expertise in the area of ‘Machine Learning for Science’ through a University Cluster of Excellence at the University of Tübingen. Candidates are especially welcome who investigate terrestrial environmental change related to biologic, geologic, or climate related processes. The chosen candidate is expected to develop an internationally visible research program that integrates ground and/or remote sensing geophysical techniques with modern and past biologic and climate processes. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to actively contribute to a successful application for a Cluster of Excellence on Geo- and Biosphere Interactions and, therefore, should have a track record of successfully attracting research funds.

Teaching contributions will be at the BSc and MSc level. The candidate is expected to conduct student instructions in a BSc course in field-based subsurface geophysical techniques. In addition, other courses at the MSc and BSc level in the candidate’s area of expertise can be taught. Teaching requirements are 9 hours/week during semesters including student advising/supervision. Teaching obligations should include contributions to both BSc and MSc courses. Teaching should be in English.

Required qualifications for the position include a PhD or equivalent international degree and postdoctoral qualifications equivalent to the requirements for tenure. This includes evidence of teaching effectiveness.

It is located in southwest Germany, is one of the oldest Universities in Germany, and hosts one of the largest geoscience departments in the country. The department is housed in the new (2020) building of the Geo and Environmental Research Center with state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities. The city of Tübingen is a mid-sized university town that is culturally and internationally diverse, and with an intellectually stimulating atmosphere. Nearby Stuttgart offers all amenities of a large city as well as an international airport. The region offers a high-quality and family-friendly standard of living with abundant recreational and cultural opportunities. More information is available at: https://www.tuebingen.de/en/1815.html

The University of Tübingen is particularly interested in increasing the number of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages women candidates to apply. In line with its internationalization agenda, the university welcomes applications from researchers outside Germany. In the case of equally qualified candidates, applicants with disabilities will be given preference.

Applications should be in English and include: a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, contact information for references familiar with the candidates research, list of publications with links to the publications, 1 page research and 1 page teaching statements, diplomas/certificates, and a completed application from
