Three Positions Available in Planetatary Volcanology and Remote Sensing

The University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) is developing a cluster hire to support state-of-the-art research activities related to planetary volcanology, geological surface processes, planetary imaging, and data management.

The advertised positions will remain open until filled, but review will begin on a rolling basis on July 1, 2021. Letters of reference are not required at the time of the initial application, but will be requested for finalist candidates prior to conducting interviews. It is anticipated that selections will be made in early August 2021. Start dates are flexible, but must be filled between August 2021 and January 2022.

The positions will support Planetary Analog and Remote Sensing research activities within Dr. Christopher Hamilton’s research group (https://www.lpl.arizona.edu/faculty/hamilton). Three positions available based on the applicant’s skill level and interests. Please only apply for one position and if you have any questions regarding which position would be the most relevant, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Hamilton (hamilton@lpl.arizona.edu).

The three positions are as follows:

Postdoctoral Research Associate I (Requisition Number: 5179). Exceptional candidates with experience in volcanology are invited to apply for the following position. The successful applicant will develop an improved inventory of volcanic eruption products on the Moon and quantify volatile release rates to an early lunar atmosphere. Experience relating to lunar igneous petrology, volatile geochemistry, and Monte Carlo modeling are desired qualifications. Additional opportunities are available for field-based investigations of volcanic terrains, as well as remote sensing and modeling investigations of volcanism on the Moon, Mars, and Io. The position is available for a minimum one-year, renewable for up to three years and it is expected that the successful candidate will prioritize fundamental research and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication to meet specified research objectives and develop their career in Planetary Sciences.

Required documents: 2-page cover letter (including a statement of research interests and goals); CV, names of three references, and a sample of recent first-author publication.

Researcher/Scientist III (Requisition Number: 5376). Experienced candidates with skills related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS), photogrammetry, data analysis and management are invited to apply for the following positions. The successful applicant will manage a state-of-the-art photogrammetry laboratory as well as a UAS-fleet. Additional experience related to LiDAR, Differential GPS, UAS-fabrication, machine learning and computer vision, geoinformatics, advanced image/data processing, and advanced programming skills are desired qualifications. This exciting position is intended for a long-term laboratory manager with opportunities for independent research, mentoring, and public outreach, and will include opportunities for both lab-based activities and fieldwork. Competitive applicants should have a background (PhD/Postdoctoral Experience) in Geology, Geophysics, Planetary Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. It is anticipated that a successful applicant will be highly motivated and independent with at least a PhD and ideally early to mid-career experience as a postdoc and/or researcher. The position will include opportunities for mentoring and independent research, but the primary objective is to manage a GIS/Photogrammetry Laboratory and UAS-facility. It is anticipated that this will be a long-term position and that the successful applicant will work closely with the new technician (Research Technologist I) to efficiently process and archive a wide range of precision topographic datasets and innovate new approaches analyzing planetary remote sensing using machine learning and geoinformatic techniques.

Research Technologist I (Requisition Number: 5468). Motivated candidates interested in performing technical work related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) deployment, photogrammetric data processing, and 3D visualization, are encouraged to apply for the following position. Additional programming skills are highly desired. The successful applicant requires a minimum of an undergraduate degree in Geology, Geophysics, Planetary Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. In addition to data processing activities, successful applicants would have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, if desired. The position is available for a minimum of one-year, though a longer-term role is greatly preferred. The position includes opportunities for additional career advancement, and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will work closely with the lab manger (Researcher/Scientist III) to efficiently process precision topographic datasets and develop original 3D visualization products. A PhD is not required, but experience with UAS data processing is preferred.
