At the Helmhotz Centre for Environmental Reearch – UFZ in Leipzig, Germany the Geomicrobial Reactive Transport Modeling Group at the Department of Environmental Microbiology seeks to fill the following position in the project “Exploratory Modeling of Water and Biogeochemical Dynamics in the Earth’s Critical Zone” of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre 1076 “AquaDiva – Understanding the Links between Surface and Subsurface Biogeosphere” .

PhD position: Biogeochemical Modeling (f/m/x) Subject: Numerical modeling of transport and biogeochemical transformations in groundwater

Starting date: September 1, 2021 or the earliest possible date. Working time 65% (25,35 hours per week), limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 4 years.

Background
This project aims to understand the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen at the catchment scale and how they are affected by climate variability and change and the associated variations of surface conditions. For this purpose the project will establish a numerical model approach which provides a quantitative interpretation of observations and concepts from different other subprojects of AquaDiva, allows to connect surface and subsurface compartments, and provides a prediction and hypothesis testing tool. Within this project the focus of this PhD position will be on modeling transport and biogeochemial transformations in groundwater.
