Job Details

The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University in cooperation with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) seeks a postdoctoral researcher or more senior researcher to conduct studies on the rapid attribution of extreme temperature and/or drought events. The project aims to develop a framework for determining the causes of such extreme events, including the role of anthropogenic forcing and its interaction with variability on shorter timescales, in near real-time. This project is part of a broader effort on the Development of a Rapid Response Capability to Evaluate Causes of Extreme Climate Events involving collaboration among GFDL, the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).

Under the supervision of Dr. Nat Johnson, the selected candidate is expected to leverage available observational and global climate model data and potentially to run climate model experiments to characterize the risks of droughts and temperature extremes. The objectives include (1) improvement of our understanding of the causes and characteristics of droughts and temperature extremes in the past, present, and future climates, (2) development of our ability to rapidly identify and attribute such extreme events in near real-time, and (3) refinement of our ability to communicate this information to a broad range of stakeholders.

The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, oceanography, hydrology, or a related field. Candidates with strong backgrounds in climate variability and the analysis of large datasets are preferred. Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.

Complete applications, including cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a publication list, and three letters of support should be submitted online to https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/21081.

Princeton is interested in candidates who, through their research, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Review of applications will begin September 15, 2021, 11:59 pm EST but applications received after that date may still be considered.

This position is subject to the University’s background check policy.

Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
