GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering 2 positions to work on ocean-based carbon dioxide removal:

  1. Scientist Position Modelling and assessing ocean alkalinity enhancement
  2. Scientist Position modelling and assessing marine carbon dioxide removal approaches

starting on August 1, 2021, or soon thereafter.

Job Descriptions

We are looking for scientists with strong expertise in at least two of the following aspects:

  • Numerical modelling of the ocean
  • numerical modelling of the climate response to carbon dioxide removal (CDR)
  • the use of numerical models or their output to investigate global ocean biogeochemistry
  • the use of numerical models or their output to investigate the climate system.

The positions are part of the German Alliance for Marine Research (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung; DAM) Research Mission “Marine carbon sinks in decarbonization pathways”.  The research will involve working as part of a vibrant interdisciplinary team at GEOMAR and collaborating with other research institutes in Germany and elsewhere.

Position (1) is part of the RETAKE project (Carbon Dioxide Removal by Alkalinity Enhancement: Potential, Benefits and Risks).  The research will involve working as part of a vibrant interdisciplinary team at GEOMAR and collaborating with other marine research institutes in Germany and elsewhere. The scientist is expected to perform simulations with a state-the-art Earth System model (FOCI) and test various scenarios of alkalinity enhancement in German waters and also various open-ocean regions worldwide. Model parameterizations and scenarios will be informed by culture experiments and mesocosm studies, as well as by economic and legal analyses performed by other research groups participating in the Research Mission, and with whom close collaboration is expected. The Research Mission includes a range of networking activities among scientists and with stakeholders, including industry and policymakers. Model results will be analyzed and published in the peer-reviewed literature, but will also be used to inform stakeholders and society about the potential, benefits and risks of alkalinity enhancement.

Position (2) is part of the ASMASYS project (Unified ASsessment framework for proposed methods of MArine CDR and interim knowledge SYnthesiS). The research will involve working as part of an interdisciplinary team where the scientist is expected to provide expertise on modelling ocean-based CDR approaches. Initial work will involve reviewing marine CDR methods with the aim of then contributing disciplinary knowledge on them to the development of a transdisciplinary CDR evaluation framework. The scientist is expected to contribute to using the framework to assess the marine CDR options under consideration in the mission. Work may also include analyzing model output and/or using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity to investigate novel marine CDR approaches. Publishing results and contributing to interdisciplinary publications, reports, and synthesis products is expected.

Qualification

We are looking for creative and committed scientists with an MSc or PhD in a natural sciences subject and extensive knowledge of physical and/or biogeochemical ocean modelling or Earth system modelling.  Knowledge of carbon dioxide removal approaches and their assessment will be beneficial. Experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary team would be helpful. The working language is English, however, proficiency in German or the ability to acquire a basic understanding would be beneficial.

The positions are available for an initial funding period of three years. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. These are full-time positions and there is the possibility to split them.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Please send your application for this post via email in a single pdf-file mentioning the keyword "RETAKE Modeling” for position (1) in the subject line and "ASMASYS Scientist” for position (2). Please send your application to the following email address:
