Overview:

The Watershed Systems Modeling Group within the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a computational hydrologist or computational watershed scientist to help develop next-generation watershed modeling tools for assessing water availability and water quality in a changing climate. We are seeking a highly motivated, organized and talented individual to join a growing, multi-disciplinary team of researchers who are developing new modeling tools for watershed hydro-biogeochemical function based on state-of-the-art parallel integrated surface/subsurface simulations and emerging machine learning methods.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

If selected, you will contribute to development, performance optimization, and testing of multiscale and spatially resolved models of groundwater and watershed hydrology and reactive transport using mid-range and leadership class supercomputers. Working with others, you will evaluate the new models with observations and participate in projections of water availability and water quality in a changing climate.

 

Qualifications Required:

 A PhD and at least two years post-PhD experience in hydrology, engineering, applied mathematics, computational science or a related field is required as is demonstrated experience in high-performance computing. Demonstrated experience with spatially resolved simulations on high-performance computers is essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as a key contributor to a multidisciplinary team are also required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with groundwater hydrology, catchment hydrology, reactive transport modeling, or related application areas would be highly advantageous. Experience with C++, Python, software engineering for research codes, and parallelization of unstructured-mesh codes would also be an advantage. Experience with machine learning applied to hydrology or other environmental systems is also of interest.
