Assistant Professor of Geosciences (Structural Geology)

The Geosciences Department at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2022. We are seeking a broadly trained structural geologist who can teach the fundamental concepts of structural geology and tectonics effectively in the classroom, lab, and field. It is equally important that the candidate has a keen interest in the relevance of structural geology for solving problems in other subdisciplines of the geosciences and in the importance of structural geology and tectonics for addressing problems of societal interest. We are especially interested in candidates who can demonstrate their experience in working with or teaching diverse student populations.

Annual teaching responsibilities will include a topical introductory geology course and a core course in structural geology and tectonics, both with labs and field trips, plus an elective course. The latter must contribute to the Environmental Studies Program at least every third year. In addition, the candidate will be expected to establish a strong scholarly record in structural geology, to supervise undergraduate research projects during the academic year and during the summer, and to participate on a regular basis in department-led field trips, and will have an opportunity to teach during the summer in the College’s Higher Educational Opportunity Program. The position also requires institutional service including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year.

Candidates should have PhD in hand at the time of application, although we will consider ABD applicants who will have completed the PhD by the start date of the position.
