Job Details

Applications are invited for a non-tenure-track position in support of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s rapidly growing undergraduate Astronomy and Astrophysics program on the Daytona Beach campus.  Primary duties include teaching introductory astronomy (labs and lectures) and physics classes and supporting observatory outreach events. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills are required.

The successful candidate will collaborate with other astronomy faculty in mentoring students to experience the campus one-meter telescope (see https://observatory.db.erau.edu) and to participate in remote observations of SARA telescopes in Arizona, Chile, and La Palma (see www.saraobservatory.org). Candidates who develop education and/or research projects connected with these facilities would be a plus.

Candidates from all astronomical fields are encouraged to apply.  ERAU astronomy faculty currently conduct research on the terrestrial and lunar atmospheres, solar system dynamics, stellar atmospheres and evolution, variable stars, and kinematics of the interstellar medium.  Preference will be given to candidates with observational and/or instrumentation experience.

The successful candidate must share the department’s commitment to an inclusive, inviting, and collaborative community, practicing excellence in instruction and scholarly activity. Individuals from populations traditionally underrepresented and underserved in STEM – women, persons of color, persons with disabilities, and persons of all gender identities and/or sexual orientations – are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in astronomy, physics, or a related field.

Candidates who can begin in January 2022 are especially encouraged to apply, but the position will remain open until filled.  Applications must be submitted online at https://embryriddle.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/External/job/Daytona-Beach-FL/Non-Tenure-Track-Assistant-Professor-of-Astronomy_R301337. Submissions should include a cover letter, full CV, teaching philosophy statement, and contact information for at least three professional references.  Applicants may be asked to provide a short video sample of their teaching.  Inquiries may be addressed to: Dr. Terry Oswalt, Search Committee Chair, Department Physical Sciences, terry.oswalt@erau.edu, 386-226-7571.
