Job Details

Research Scientist, CSISS/SESS

The George Mason University Satellite and Earth Science Study (SESS) Program, in the College of Science, has an opening for a Research Scientist position for chemical transport modeling and satellite applications. This position will also serve as Associate Director of the SESS program. SESS conducts cutting-edge research on Earth system modeling, satellite remote sensing and applications. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourage candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Responsibilities:

We seek a highly motivated, energetic individual to develop global and regional air quality models for research and operational forecasting, and assist the Director of Satellite and Earth System Studies Program to manage research projects and promote collaborations with federal agencies. The selected finalist will also serve as Associate Director of the SESS program. The incumbent will contribute to a research-to-operation (R2O) project, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that applies satellite products through innovative data assimilation techniques to improve operational dust forecasts at local, regional and national levels. The improved dust prediction can be utilized to support key decision-making activities in public health surveillance, highway safety, and air quality management.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Remote Sensing, Geography, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related field;
  • In-depth understanding of atmospheric chemistry, and/or weather/climate modeling, or satellite remote sensing;
  • Demonstrated records of scientific writing;
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming skills including code development and shell scripting;
  • Experience with atmospheric model development and analysis (e.g., CMAQ, WRF-chem, GEOS-chem, CESM), or satellite remote sensing and applications to atmospheric models;
  • Experience in managing and processing large data sets;
  • Experience in managing research projects and coordinating large research teams.

For full consideration, applicants must apply at https://jobs.gmu.edu/ ; complete and submit the online application; and upload a cover letter, resume, and a list of three professional references with contact information.
