Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension depending on performance and funding availability.

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of environmental metabolomics and/or environmental analytical chemistry. The Kujawinski lab uses analytical chemistry to explore the intersection of microbial biology and chemistry within marine systems.

The Institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

Online application forms should be submitted with a cover letter, complete curriculum vitae, and the names/contact information of three potential  recommendation letter writers uploaded as a separate cover letter.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2021 and continue until position is filled. Inquiries should be addressed to ekujawinski@whoi.edu.

Essential Functions

Potential projects include: use of metabolomics to understand the physiology of model marine organisms, comparison of laboratory and field data to infer the contribution of model organisms to marine organic matter cycling, and others.  The successful applicant will be trained by us in all aspects of environmental sample analysis, including sample processing, mass spectrometry, and data analysis.

Education & Experience

  • A PhD in chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry, analytical chemistry or a related field is required.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry and downstream data analysis as well as knowledge of programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, and R would be advantageous.
  • Candidates with interests in linking chemical and biological datasets are especially encouraged to apply.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 20 pounds at least 1-2 x a month. Visual abilities to include near, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors.  Must have fine manual dexterity. Must be able to function in a lab setting, or alone.

WHOI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/Veterans/M/F. We encourage Veterans and those with Disabilities to apply. Applications are reviewed confidentially.
