Job Details

The Kayler lab in the Soil and Water Systems department at the University of Idaho is seeking PhD and MSc students to investigate belowground biogeochemistry.

The students will work on belowground processes impacted by climate and land-use change, including soil organic matter turnover, plant-microbe interactions, and nutrient cycling. Other potential projects include sediment biogeochemistry and dissolved nutrients of aquatic systems. The ideal candidates have field and research experience, research products (thesis, poster, publication), and strong recommendations.

The lab houses state-of-the-art isotopic analyzers, gas analyzers, and a GC-MS. The University of Idaho also maintains its own sequencing and bioinformatics laboratory. Projects in the lab include accelerator mass spectrometry and biogeochemical modeling through collaboration with national lab partners. The expected starting date is spring 2022 (January).

Please contact Dr. Kayler for more information. Send an email with the subject “PhD Student Application” to: Dr. Zachary Kayler ( that contains the following: (1) a one-page cover letter describing your academic and research experience, reasons for pursuing graduate school, your specific current research interests; and (2) your curriculum vitae.
