Position description

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego invites applications for a full-time Researcher position to be funded by extramural research grants and contracts in the area of Acoustical Oceanography. We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in ocean acoustics, ocean acoustic tomography, acoustic signal processing, environmental parameter inversions, or other closely related fields with an emphasis on deep-water acoustics. The successful candidate will be distinguished by a deep understanding of the interaction of acoustic propagation with ocean processes across multiple scales.

The Researcher series at Scripps Oceanography parallels the Professor series in terms of research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers receive eleven-month appointments with 25% salary support from institutional sources but are expected to establish an externally funded research program that provides the remainder of their salary support. Researchers at Scripps often obtain educator appointments as well and serve as graduate student advisors.

We seek motivated, broad-thinking scientists to provide intellectual leadership while complementing existing experimental research groups such as the Acoustical Oceanography Group in the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, while building bridges to other areas in the Earth and the Ocean & Atmosphere Sections. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research as well as service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Candidates will be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Researcher levels. Rank and salary will be consistent with the applicant's qualifications, experience, and University of California pay scales.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography is a world-renowned center of solid Earth, planetary, oceanographic, biological, and atmospheric research committed to academic excellence and diversity within its student body, staff, and approximately 200 principal investigators (https://scripps.ucsd.edu/diversity).
