Assistant/Associate Professor of Geological Engineering

University of Mississippi

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  The anticipated appointment date is January 2022, with the possibility starting in August 2021.  Although the area of teaching and research expertise is open, the successful candidate for each position will be required to contribute broadly to our geological engineering programs, complement or supplement our existing areas of expertise, and contribute to retention efforts and advising undergraduate geological engineering students.

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering offers B.S. degrees in both the SACS-accredited Geology program and ABET-accredited Geological Engineering program, with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Hydrology.  We are located in the historic town of Oxford, in the wooded hills of north Mississippi. Oxford has a small college-town atmosphere with excellent public schools, affordable housing, performing arts, fine restaurants, and bookstores.  The urban attractions of Memphis, Tennessee are 70 miles to the north.

The successful candidate for the position will teach two courses per semester while maintaining an active research agenda.  Excellence in research will be established by critical peer evaluation, publication record, research grant applications, and graduate student supervision and support.  Responsibilities will include advising undergraduate majors and student organizations, developing curriculum, serving on university committees, and service to the community and profession.

All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in a discipline related to geological engineering at time of appointment.  The position requires evidence of engineering-related experience or expertise, but does not require traditional engineering credentials.  Additional requirements are demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in geology and geological engineering, effective communication skills, a strong desire to mentor students, and evidence of scholarly achievement.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled or until an adequate applicant pool is established.  Apply online only at http://jobs.olemiss.edu.  Applications cannot be accepted in any other format.  Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, including a publication list, a statement of research and teaching interests, a separate statement outlining how they see themselves contributing to our mission of building a diverse and inclusive discipline with a strong department, and contact information for three references.

If you need assistance with the online application process, please contact The University of Mississippi Employment Office at 662-915-5690.  For additional information, contact Dr. Robert M. Holt at rmholt@olemiss.edu.  The University of Mississippi is an EEO/AA /Title VI/Title IX/Section 504, ADA/ADEA employer.
