The Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL) at the Carnegie Institution for Science seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the physical properties of the Earth’s mantle. The successful applicant will perform multi-anvil experiments and make measurements of electrical conductivity and sound velocity of mantle materials in situ at high pressure and temperature. The successful candidate will lead the project, and collaboration with experimentalists and geophysicists at EPL as part of the interpretation and publication of experimental results is anticipated. Funding is available for travel to scientific conferences. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to develop a side-project independently.

Minimum qualification for this position is a doctoral degree in mineral physics, experimental petrology, geophysics or a related field at the time of appointment. The candidate should have experience in high-pressure experiments, preferably the multi-anvil apparatus. It is desired that candidates have experience or familiarity with impedance spectroscopy and/or sound velocity measurements.
The appointment is for one year, with renewal for a second year pending progress. The position can begin as of January 1, 2022 and will be based at the Broad Branch Road campus of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC.
