The Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL) at the Carnegie Institution for Science seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the physical properties of the Earth’s mantle. The successful applicant will perform multi-anvil experiments and make measurements of electrical conductivity and sound velocity of mantle materials in situ at high pressure and temperature. The successful candidate will lead the project, and collaboration with experimentalists and geophysicists at EPL as part of the interpretation and publication of experimental results is anticipated. Funding is available for travel to scientific conferences. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to develop a side-project independently.

The Carnegie Institution strives to enable a scientifically excellent, equitable, and inclusive community, and therefore aims for diverse groups of people to collaborate and thrive at EPL. We encourage applicants from under-represented groups and backgrounds and with a diverse set of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives to apply. The Carnegie Institution is an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of gender, race/ethnicity, protected veteran status, disability, or other protected group status.

The Earth and Planets Laboratory supports world-class laboratory facilities in high-pressure research, analytical geochemistry and materials spectroscopy. Carnegie Science also supports theoretical, data analytic, geodynamic and mineral physics investigations by providing access to state-of-the-art computational facilities. Postdoctoral Fellows at EPL have access to valuable training resources, and opportunities for mentoring and professional development are provided to help launch successful scientific careers in academia and industry.

Minimum qualification for this position is a doctoral degree in mineral physics, experimental petrology, geophysics or a related field at the time of appointment. The candidate should have experience in high-pressure experiments, preferably the multi-anvil apparatus. It is desired that candidates have experience or familiarity with impedance spectroscopy and/or sound velocity measurements.

The appointment is for one year, with renewal for a second year pending progress. The position can begin as of January 1, 2022 and will be based at the Broad Branch Road campus of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. Application materials must include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), (3) a statement of previous research and research interests no longer than 3 pages, and (4) the contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
