Assistant Professor in Planetary Geoscience

The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the broad area of Planetary Geoscience, including geophysics, remote sensing, mineralogy, and geochemistry. This position is part of a new initiative to expand the role of space science on campus to build on the legacy of James Van Allen. Applicants with interest in space missions and general experience or research interest in lunar geology and/or geophysics are particularly welcomed. The successful applicant will be invited to join the lunar mission planning team in the Physics & Astronomy Department, who are involved in existing NASA lunar missions (THEMIS-ARTEMIS; Lunar Vertex) and who are developing proposals to NASA’s Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon (PRISM) and Development and Advancement of Lunar Instrumentation (DALI) programs, as well as the NASA Discovery program. A variety of facilities relevant to Planetary research are available: (a) The Materials-Fabrication-Testing Facility houses instrumentation for chemical analysis (LA-ICP-MS, sector-field ICP-MS, XRF, EMP, Raman), imaging (SEM), metrology, and nanofabrication; (b) The Physics & Astronomy Department has particular expertise in building instrumentation for space missions, through its Machine Shop, the Electronics Assembly Shop, and Electronics Repair and Calibration facility; (c) High-Performance Computing resources are available through the Information Technology Services’ Research Services department. 

Requirements for this position are a Ph.D. in a planetary geoscience discipline at the time of appointment. The ideal candidate will have a record of publication and other achievements that demonstrates a strong potential to develop a nationally and internationally recognized externally funded research program. Post-doctoral experience and demonstrated effectiveness in college-level teaching are desirable attributes. The successful candidate will be expected to attract and mentor graduate students as well as teach core courses and other undergraduate and graduate level courses.
