OREM, UTAH. The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Physical Geography, to begin August 2022. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by August 2022 in physical geography or a closely related discipline, experience in remote sensing and GIS techniques, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. We invite applications from candidates with expertise in any of a wide range of sub-disciplines including environmental change and sustainability, hydrology, geomorphology, climate and atmospheric science, biogeography, and other specialties. Responsibilities will include teaching lower and upper division courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, including remote sensing and GIS, as well as engaging in scholarship and supervision of undergraduate research, working to develop our geography and GIS programs, overseeing our GIS computer lab, and service. Excellent teaching skills and a strong commitment to effective teaching and undergraduate research are necessary.

The Department of Earth Science consists of 13 full-time faculty, with a wide range of expertise in geography, geology, earth science education, and environmental science and management. We offer bachelor’s degrees in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science and Management, and Earth Science Education; and a certificate in GIS. The department has excellent facilities that include a 24-workstation GIS laboratory and additional high-powered computer workstations, survey-grade GNSS equipment, several sUAS for low altitude aerial photography and remote-sensing, and geochemical analytical facilities. Our workstations are well equipped with software including ArcGIS, ERDAS, ENVI, AgiSoft, Adobe Creative Cloud, Trimble Pathfinder and Business Center, and Matlab. The department has excellent ties to the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and governmental organizations.

UVU is located in the Provo-Orem metropolitan area, with more than 670,000 residents and a 27.5% growth rate between 2010 and 2020, the 5th fastest growing MSA in the United States. Orem sits at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and offers truly outstanding recreational opportunities.
