Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Computational Earth Science Group in the Earth and Environmental Services (EES) Division is currently seeking five motivated applicants to be Computational Earth Science Postdocs. Candidates will work primarily on projects related to:

  • Subsurface flow and transport, surface hydrology, climate, fire, wildfire and atmospheric transport in support of both national security and environmental applications
  • Computational model development and applications in gas migration in subsurface porous media that include coupled thermal, mechanical, hydrologic and chemical systems
  • Land surface and numerical modeling to create new representations of Arctic permafrost hydrology as well as trips to Alaska to support the collection of field observations for model improvement
  • Theoretical/computational development of machine learning algorithms and tools and application of physics-informed and unsupervised machine learning for geothermal exploration, oil/gas production and carbon sequestration
  • Issues related to regional deployment of large-scale Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects including quantification and management of long-term risks; real-time prediction and field management; and regional infrastructure
  • Remote sensing and big data analysis in the earth sciences or energy resource modeling

The term of the appointment is two years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

Requirements:

  • Research experience in relevant computational science theory, code development or applications
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals and oral presentations at conferences
  • Experience working with modeling, data analytics, high-performance computing or field work desirable
