Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Environmental and Earth-systems change

The Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Environmental and Earth systems, pending budgetary approval to begin August 2022. We welcome applications from scholars who pursue cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary research to better understand environmental and Earth-systems change across time scales. The ideal candidate would draw from atmospheric science, paleoclimatology, geochemistry, geology, geography, and related fields to understand the multi-scale global monsoon, and climate system to improve future predictions. This scholar would utilize relevant research methods in the field of Earth Systems Science, including but not limited to weather chemistry (e.g., rainwater isotope analysis), geochemistry (e.g., ICPMS, XRD, XRF), climatology, and data science (e.g., weather stations and satellite data analysis), and modeling (e.g., climate model simulations and model output data analysis).

This position will play a central role in the continued growth of the Department of Geosciences and its contributions to Georgia State University’s strategic goals of using collaborative research to tackle the most challenging global and urban issues of the 21st century and ensuring that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Our faculty members are committed to combating racism, sexism, and other forms of structural bias in our disciplines, departments, institutions, and communities. The successful candidate will share this commitment. The department similarly acknowledges the inequitable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and commits to accounting for this disproportionate impact in application evaluations.

The Department of Geosciences at GSU is distinguished by its emphasis on both the social and physical dimensions of the environment. The department maintains research and teaching strengths, and ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations, in urban environments, water science, climate change, geographic information science, and geochemistry. The Department of Geosciences also maintains active relationships with the Urban Studies Institute, School of Public Health, and other departments across the College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate is expected to help strengthen these collaborations.
