We are seeking two postdoctoral fellows for global remote sensing of vegetation in Ecological Sensing AI Lab, Seoul National University.

Postdoc 1: Generating a long-term, consistent vegetation data

As a part of LEMONTREE consortium (https://research.reading.ac.uk/lemontree/), this postdoc will develop a long-term (1980s-now), consistent (orbit drift correction etc) vegetation records (NDVI, fPAR, LAI, NIRv, SIF, etc.) by merging multiple satellite data and machine learning. The generated data will be used as forcing and/or benchmark data for LSM which will be developed in the LEMONTREE consortium. SNU and Columbia (Pierre Gentine group) take the lead in remote sensing part in the consortium, so the postdoc will be required in taking the leadership in the collaboration.

Postdoc 2: Understanding interannual variability and trends of global land surface fluxes

Our group has been making satellite based long-term land surface flux [radiation (SW, PAR, diffuse PAR), energy (Rnet, H, LE), water (ET), and carbon (GPP, RECO, NEE)] maps. The postdoc will investigate interannual variability and trends of the coupled fluxes and states (e.g. LUE, CUE, WUE) concurrently with independent datasets such as FLUXNET, LSMs , atmospheric inversion and other RS datasets. Close collaboration with Posdoc1 and external collaborators will be required.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent skills in programming at least one of Python, R, MATLAB

  • Big data processing/analysis with strong quantitative skill

  • PhD in remote sensing, or biometeorology or ecophysiology

  • Moderate (or better) level of English speaking/writing

  • Communication skills internally (lab) and externally (international collaborators)

  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others

Duties:

  • Writing journal papers

  • Presenting research outcomes in scientific meetings

  • Writing annual project report

  • Mentoring graduate students

Contact to Youngryel Ryu (ryuyr77@gmail.com) if you are passionate for those topics, have great ideas to understand this complex challenging task, are learning animal, and are willing to join our adventure towards the vision, “a sustainable world where ecological information is available and accessible to anyone.”  I will request cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information of three references. The positions are available immediately and will be open until filled.

Seoul National University is located in the Gwanak Mountain, southern part of the Seoul City in South Korea. Numerous mountain trails are accessible in the campus whereas “Gangnam”, the center of amusement in Seoul, is within 30 min. There are diverse groups of international students/scholars. There is a dormitory for international scholars which offers low cost, nice housing for family or single (FYI, 1 bed dorm is $350/mon, 2bed dorm is $550/mon).

If you have any question, feel free to send emails to Dr Ryu. Welcome to visit our lab webpage to see our research and activity (http://environment.snu.ac.kr/).
