Associate Research Scientist

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to conduct research in the Lamont Geoinformatics Research Group related to astromaterials samples and data acquired on those samples to support the development and operation of the Astromaterials Data System, including information models; metadata quality assessment and control; tools for sample and data/metadata management, and quality assessment; interfaces for discovery, access, and visualization. Responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing day-to-day tasks and workplans for the Astromaterials Data System project pertaining to data curation; user requirements including user surveys and usability testing; coordination with other GRG projects (EarthChem, SESAR) and external data systems; community engagement and outreach, including maintenance of the Astromat web site; and reporting. Contribute to disseminating progress and project outcomes through conference presentations and publications in the scientific literature. Identify opportunities for engagement and collaboration within Columbia University and the broader planetary data ecosystem.

Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Product management of the Astromaterials Data System, including planning, coordinating, and overseeing day-to-day tasks and workplans; user requirements including user surveys and usability testing; coordination with other GRG projects.
  • Research related to cyberinfrastructure for astromaterials samples and laboratory analytical data.
  • Community engagement and outreach for the Astromaterials Data System. Support for community governance activities.
  • Will exercise independent judgment and initiative expected as well as supervision of others in data compilation, data documentation, and ingestion into databases.
  • Receives general supervision from Doherty Senior Research Scientist.
  • Some responsibility for budgets pertaining to purchases and travel.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Earth or Planetary Sciences, Information Sciences, or related fields with extensive experience in astromaterials research, scientific data management, data stewardship, data modeling, and the digital management of physical samples and collections.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and community leadership.
  • Highly organized and efficient, excellent oral and written communication skills.

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding.
