Project title:

Fluxes of greenhouse gases in Amazonia combining measurements of flux towers and modeling of the land biosphere.

Research theme area:

This research is part of the RCGI project - 64 GHG project - D.1, which has the title: “Greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon and data analysis system and services”. In this project, a multidisciplinary team will build a computer system that integrates data associated with the emission of greenhouse gases in the Amazon, which integrate land use changes, remote sensing of greenhouse gases, meteorological parameters, forest degradation data, internal measures. in situ in soil and in fluxes and concentrations of greenhouse gases in the Amazon. The project will integrate land use change data from MapBiomas, INPE deforestation and fire detection systems, remote sensing and in-situ measurement of greenhouse gases data in an open access computational platform using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, with web access.

Abstract:

This project proposes to develop a computational structure to integrate and synthesize the observational data from different sources, such as carbon flux data collected from LBA (The Large-Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia) and ATTO (Amazon Tall Tower Observatory) flux towers, compiling a detailed database of different towers and simulations of the biosphere with dynamic vegetation models. In addition, it is proposed to test efficient methods of filling gaps and data consistency, making available standardized methods (and computational tools) for better understanding and forecasting of the interaction processes between the biosphere and the atmosphere in various
aspects of the carbon cycle. The integration of observational data and biosphere models is important to quantify and monitor the terrestrial carbon balance in the Amazonian region, consistently with the global balance, but still continuously improving spatial and temporal resolutions and the number of processes considered. The structure is proposed to be based on international experience such as that of the FLUXNET network, allowing researchers from the Brazilian scientific community to have access to the integrated set of data on multiple time and space scales, including continuous high-precision measurements of CO2, CH4 and other gases and particles being made at various levels in the ATTO tower and detailed simulations of the GHG budgets from dynamic vegetation models.

Description:

The applicant will contribute in line with the main objectives of the project:
The main objective of this Pos Doc. project is the quantification of the terms that make up the greenhouse gas (GHG) balances in the intact forest, compiling long term data that has been collected in flux towers of the LBA and ATTO programs and combining with simulations using process-based models of vegetation dynamics to produce the best estimate of net carbon exchanges in intact forest areas (averages, interannual variability, recent and historical trends). As secondary objective: to structure the database and encourage the collaboration of several research groups responsible for the flux towers in the region, it is proposed to offer the attraction of carrying out all quality control, data gap-filling, estimating uncertainties and a detailed 'benchmark' that is quickly made available to the data provider. In addition to these data, all computer codes, model simulations and inter-comparative analyzes will also be made available to collaborating groups, with the aim of encouraging the participation of different groups.

Requirements to fill the position:

This Post Doc scholarship is suitable for a highly motivated researcher with a background in physics, chemistry, engineering, calculus, mathematics or geography. Requires programming skills in MatLab, Fortran or Python. It requires knowledge in the use of geographic information systems. English proficiency is required. Ability to collaborate and develop your work in large teams is required.
The candidate must have obtained a doctorate degree less than seven years ago, priority for candidates who have just completed the Doctorate, within the regular duration, with an excellent academic record in postgraduate studies.
