Project title:

Validation and calibration of satellite measurements of aerosols and trace gases with surface monitoring stations.

Research theme area:

This research is part of the RCGI project - 64 GHG project - D.1, which has the title: “Greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon and data analysis system and services”. In this project, a multidisciplinary team will build a computer system that integrates data associated with the emission of greenhouse gases in the Amazon, which integrate land use changes, remote sensing of greenhouse gases, meteorological parameters, forest degradation data, internal measures. in situ in soil and in fluxes and concentrations of greenhouse gases in the Amazon. The project will integrate land use change data from MapBiomas, INPE deforestation and fire detection systems, remote sensing and in-situ measurement of greenhouse gases data in an open access computational platform using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, with web access.

Abstract:

This project aims to provide estimates of aerosols and GHG over Amazonia using state-ofthe-art measurements from sensors on-board orbiting satellites. Such data, however, have not yet been verified against observations from monitoring stations at the earth´s surface and therefore the differences between the remote sensing and ground sampling techniques are unknown. We will compare the remote sensing and surface measurement data since 2002 to determine their correlation and adjust the satellite data to better represent surface data for the Amazon basin. MODIS (from TERRA and AQUA) and
TROPOMI (from Sentinel-5) will be the main sources for aerosol and GHG measurements, and their data basis will be prepared for use at national, state and county level, in temporal periods selected by the users. Surface data for validation will be used all over Amazonia, in particular at the ATTO tower, Acre, Rondônia and other sites. Aerosol optical depth will be validated with the NASA AERONET network.

Description:

The applicant will contribute in line with the main objectives of the project:
The post-doc objective will be to work on satellite validation with ground-based
measurements for aerosols and GHG. The Pos doc will develop algorithms that will adjust the satellite data to their best possible spatial and temporal extrapolation for the overall Amazonian region.

Requirements to fill the position:

This Post Doc scholarship is suitable for a highly motivated researcher with a background in areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, calculus, mathematics, geography or meteorology. Requires programming skills in MatLab, Fortran or Python. It requires knowledge in the use of geographic information systems—desirable knowledge of remote sensing techniques for land-use change and satellite gas measurements. English proficiency is required. The ability to collaborate and develop your work in large teams is required.
The candidate should have solid experience with access and processing images from MODIS and TROPOMI and of fire pixels, in the extraction of data from INPE´s Wildfire Program, in statistical analysis of spatially distributed data, and in the development of algorithms.
The candidate must have obtained a doctorate degree less than seven years ago, priority for candidates who have just completed the Doctorate, within the regular duration, with an excellent academic record in postgraduate studies.
