Position description

The University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for the Jack and Laura Dangermond Chair in Conservation Science. We seek a highly creative scholar who is conducting interdisciplinary research in the area of conservation and ecological science and who is leveraging geographic technology, which we define broadly as spatial approaches to data collection and/or analysis and model-ing. We are especially interested in applications from individuals who are advancing scholarship related to conservation that is rooted in a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Candidates should have a distinguished record of active scholarly engagement and teaching, and a demonstrated record of successfully leading interdisciplinary research teams. They will also be expected to contribute to advancing partnerships between UCSB and regional organizations including the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve. The Preserve was established in 2017 by a gift from Jack and Laura Dangermond. The 24,000-acre nature reserve is culturally and ecologically significant, protects 8 miles of coastline in southwest Santa Barbara County, and is managed by The Nature Conservancy, a close partner with UC Santa Barbara in conservation and research efforts.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Full Professor with a primary appointment in any one of several departments at UCSB, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Responsibilities of faculty members generally include the development of an actively funded research pro-gram of the highest quality, teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, recruitment, supervision, and mentorship of graduate students, and participation in university service and professional activities. Successful candidates will have a record of collaborative research, and will be able to leverage synergies across the campus. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Ph.D. in environmental studies, conservation studies, ecology and evolution, geography, geographic information science, or a related field is required at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications
