The USDA-ARS, National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment (NLAE) is seeking a permanent, full-time Laboratory Director to lead the USDA’s primary laboratory for integrated research on the effects of agricultural production systems on soil, water and air quality. This position is in the Senior Scientific Technical Service (SSTS).  The mission of the NLAE is to generate information addressing critical problems in agricultural production system and watershed management to develop innovative solutions that increase the system efficiency and reduce environmental risk. The Laboratory includes two Research Units: Agroecosystems Management and Soil, Water and Air Resources. The NLAE is located on the Iowa State University campus in Ames, IA. The two research units are uniquely organized to optimize sustainable agricultural production systems through integrated research programming that captures the scope of crop and animal production from soil, nutrient, manure, and pest management under changing climate to agroecosystem impacts on soil, water, and air resources. A total of 20 research scientists and more than 30 support personnel carry out the $13 million research program of the NLAE. The Laboratory Director works with the Midwest Area Director, Office of National Programs, and other management officials in planning, coordinating, and evaluating sustainable agricultural production research programs. Excellent working relationships exist with University research partners, industry and stakeholders.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
