Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division is currently seeking two (2) dynamic applicants to be Earth Systems Observations Deputy Group Leaders to assist in leading the 100-member Earth Systems Observations group (EES-14) in their research encompassing geologic, geochemical, geospatial, hydrological, ecological, landscape and atmospheric sciences.

Your efforts will help us grow in areas like national security/non-proliferation, decarbonization of the economy, sustainable energy, climate and ecological security, natural hazards, subsurface fluid flow, advanced reactor fuels and logistical deployments in support of the scientific enterprise. You will support the Group Leader in all aspects of group leadership, including:

  • Operational, strategic development and personnel development activities
  • Research program development, oversight and technical development of laboratory facilities
  • Safety and compliance
  • Promoting diversity and assisting with personnel management

 

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in earth science discipline (e.g., geo science, environmental physics, chemistry, hydrology, ecology, atmospheric science); PhD in a STEM field strongly preferred
  • 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated technical accomplishments relevant to one or more of the EES-14 areas of research and operations
  • Demonstrated scientific leadership of research project teams or management of a research-oriented organization
  • Record of identifying and responding to funding opportunities and program development
  • Proven ability to conduct research or development activities, investigating and recommending alternative solutions to problems affecting research and development activities, projects or initiatives

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in and managing field-based programs or analytical laboratories with chemical, electrical, pressure or radiological safety requirements
  • Experience mentoring and motivating colleagues and resolving conflicts
  • Demonstrated ability in technical writing, including reports, proposals and presentations
  • Knowledge of and networks with external sponsoring organizations (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, other government agencies, industry, etc.) and with existing or potential external or internal collaborators
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship
