Serves as Division Director for the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS), Directorate for Geosciences (GEO). The mission of the Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences is to enable fundamental research as well as to support relevant infrastructure and education that advances understanding of the behavior of the earth’s atmosphere and its interactions with the sun. The Division also provides support for participation by the United States scientific community in international scientific research endeavors, such as the World Climate Research Program. The Division supports instrumentation and facilities, interdisciplinary research, education and outreach, broadening participation, centers and large coordinated field projects, as well as support for individual investigators and research groups. The AGS Division Director serves as a member of the GEO leadership team and as the Directorate’s principal spokesperson in atmospheric and geospace sciences research. In collaboration with administrative personnel and the Section Heads for Atmosphere, Geospace, and NCAR/Facilities, the incumbent is responsible for the overall planning, management and commitment of budgeted funds for the Division, and overseeing and managing the effective use of division staff and resources in meeting organizational goals and objectives. To this end and together with the leadership and administrative teams, responsibilities include directing the activities of AGS, assessing the needs and trends in atmospheric and geospace sciences research and education, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning, and policy setting. The Division Director supervises and provides leadership with input and guidance from Section Heads, Program Officers, and administrative and support personnel.


The successful candidate will possess an established record of significant achievement in research administration as well as leadership responsibility in academe, industry, or government. In addition to having a strong record of professional accomplishments, the successful candidate must be experienced and competent in technical, financial, and administrative management. The successful candidate must work well with people, be an effective communicator, and act as a mentor to continuously develop the diversity of talent and skills of colleagues at all levels.


Appointment to this position may be on a Senior Executive Service (SES) Career, SES limited-term appointment (1-3 years), or Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment. The salary range is $174,225 to $194,516.
