The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University, Germany, and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel jointly invite applications for a

Junior Professorship (W 1) in Physical Oceanography

with temporary civil service status for an initial period of four years (first phase) to start at the earliest possible time.

The future job holder will represent the field of physical oceanography in research and teaching. The Professorship is based at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in the Research Unit ‘Physical Oceanography’ which is part of the Research Division ‘Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics’.

The research interests of the applicant should be in process oriented observational physical oceanography and related data/ model analysis. A focus might include processes relevant for ocean and climate dynamics, wind-driven and thermohaline circulation, water mass transformation, mesoscale and sub-mesoscale variability, internal waves and air-sea interaction.

An interest in using modern observational methods, including shipboard, moored, and glider observations is expected as well as experiences in modern data analysis and methods of data science or artificial intelligence. We particularly expect interdisciplinary cooperation with other GEOMAR departments and within Kiel Marine Sciences. International collaboration within the EU and beyond is desired.

The successful applicant should preferably have a university degree and a PhD in physical oceanography or a related subject. Experience in obtaining third party funding is an advantage.

Please refer to the recruitment requirements of § 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. After successful evaluation of the first phase of the junior professorship it is the aim to extend the temporary civil servant status for another period of two years (second phase).
