SUMMARY:

We seek a Research Scientist to lead the establishment of a new Arctic Carbon Monitoring Network, which will include the establishment of ten new eddy covariance monitoring sites across the Arctic-boreal region and coordination and support for existing flux sites. The Research Scientist will work closely with collaborators and Woodwell scientists to develop the Monitoring Network, including identifying and establishing new flux sites, establishing and maintaining collaborations and partnerships with the eddy covariance flux community, sharing and publishing research results, and working with the project team to upscale and integrate data into a pan-Arctic modeling framework to assess the current and future carbon balance of the Arctic-boreal region. This position is part of a larger project to monitor and project Arctic-boreal carbon emissions, inform climate mitigation policy, and facilitate climate adaptation in permafrost regions. This role will work within a highly collaborative environment and be supported by a strong project team including process modelers, remote sensing experts, field scientists, a project manager, and communications and policy experts.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a network of collaborators, partners, and Woodwell scientists to guide the development of the Arctic Carbon Monitoring Network, including the establishment of ten new eddy covariance flux sites and support for existing sites as needed to ensure data continuity and coverage.
  • Manage a research team that will include two Postdoctoral Researchers, Research Assistants, and a Research Technician.
  • Participate in some travel with the research team to establish and maintain eddy covariance flux sites.
  • Oversee research including data collection, processing, quality control, analyses, and archiving.
  • Coordinate and work closely with the project’s Arctic Flux Steering Committee and other networks to develop improved channels for data sharing.
  • Synthesize, present, and publish research results.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field
  • Experience setting up and/or maintaining eddy covariance instrumentation, and collecting, processing, interpreting, and synthesizing eddy-covariance flux data.
  • Ability and interest to work with international partners, collaborators, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Arctic carbon cycling, Arctic ecology, and/or climate change research.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in sciences.
  • Experience and/or interest in research collaboration and co-production with Arctic Indigenous scientists, knowledge-holders, and residents.
  • Ability to work as a member of a highly collaborative team, work across disciplines, and interest in contributing to broader science, communication, and policy goals.
  • Demonstrated record of publication in scientific journals.
  • Ability to lead a research team and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee progress toward project goals, objectives, and tasks.

Application review will begin on December 13, 2021

Desired Start Date: March 7, 2022

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The salary range is $90,000 - 125,000. This is a five-year fixed-term appointment with the potential to extend. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and values a healthy work life balance.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Woodwell

WE NEED ALL VOICES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our lifetimes. Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell) understands that the climate crisis—from causes to consequences—is inextricably linked with persistent social injustice. Effectively addressing either requires addressing both. The climate crisis demands that we bring to bear all of the knowledge, expertise, innovation, and creativity that we can collectively muster, and those who have been marginalized and disproportionately impacted must be heard.

The work Woodwell does—the questions we ask, the ways we seek answers, and the strategies we put forward—is stronger when shaped by a diversity of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences. We strive to welcome, respect, and amplify differing voices. We value individuals as they are, with all their differences in race, age, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, language, and mental and physical abilities.

Woodwell acknowledges that our organization, and the scientific community more broadly, have a long way to go in living up to these ideals. We approach the work of improving our organization with the same ambition and commitment to systemic change that we bring to addressing climate change.

We will inevitably make mistakes, but we will continue to listen, learn, and do this critical work. We understand that this work requires an ongoing commitment from each and every one of us. We are actively engaged in building and sustaining an equitable and inclusive culture within our organization, and in fostering greater diversity in climate science.
