The Department of Chemistry at ECU (chemistry.ecu.edu) currently has 31 faculty supporting BS, BA, and MS programs hosted within the Department.  Chemistry faculty also mentor PhD students in ECU’s Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry and are able to mentor students through ECU’s Integrated Coastal Sciences PhD program.  State of the art facilities support research across chemistry domains, including analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biological chemistry.  The Department has a historical strength in biochemistry, with multiple collaborations with scientists across the university, including Brody School of Medicine.  The department also spearheaded significant industrial partnerships via extramural funding to support pharmaceutical analysis, leading to the newly minted Eastern Region Pharma Center. The Department has a strong commitment to inter-disciplinary research, in particular growing opportunities for cross-campus collaboration in environmental and coastal science.

 ECU’s Water Resources Center (water.ecu.edu) is housed within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences with a mission to enable ECU faculty and students to perform world-class water-related research, education, and outreach across Eastern North Carolina.  The Center and its collaborative office, laboratory, and field facilities supports the work of over 30 affiliated faculty from natural science, social science, and engineering across the institution with an emphasis on developing programs and infrastructure that support strategic initiatives at ECU.  Having received over $14M in external funding support over the past three years, researchers within the Center form a supportive and highly active interdisciplinary community.  Research activities in the Center span carbon and nutrient cycling in the environment, risks from and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise, traditional and ecologically-based water treatment systems, health and economic impacts of water, water policy and governance, and community-based science and environmental justice.

Job Duties        

ECU invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry within the Department of Chemistry.  This person will also become a core faculty member within ECU’s interdisciplinary Water Resources Center and is expected to be highly research active, serve as a catalyst for new research projects, and participate in collaborative multi-partner research programs. The new hire will have a reduced teaching commitment to meet these expectations.  The successful candidate will be expected to bridge across disciplines to create research synergies related to environmental chemistry.  Areas of need that are likely to translate into strong collaborative opportunities include the characterization of chemicals and their transformations in the environment, enhancement of water and wastewater treatment processes, evaluation of biogeochemically mediated processes (organic and/or inorganic), forensic environmental chemistry and non-targeted analysis, community-based science and environmental justice, and the development of analytical techniques that can be utilized for remote detection of chemicals. The specific chemistry research and teaching area of the candidate are open, but an emphasis will be placed in analytical chemistry and/or physical chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Exceptional candidates from all relevant research areas will be considered. Successful faculty at ECU mentor student research, participate in grant proposal preparation to obtain external funding, and build a strong record of scholarship through peer-reviewed publication. As an interdisciplinary scholar, this faculty member will be expected to teach discipline-based courses in chemistry and lead interdisciplinary research, including course-based undergraduate research experiences or other (inter)disciplinary-based education initiatives supporting ECU’s commitment to student learning and regional transformation.

Minimum Education/Experience

A PhD in Chemistry or related field, such as Chemical Engineering, Geochemistry, Biochemistry, or Materials Science, is required; however, ABD candidates may be considered.  Candidates with PhD conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold the probationary rank of Assistant Professor.  ABD candidates will also be initially appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment.  Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.  All candidates must demonstrate an interest in interdisciplinary research and education.
