Postdoctoral Researcher – Boreal Fire Mapping Falmouth, Massachusetts Link to apply: https://bit.ly/3xCJHOY

SUMMARY:

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to lead remote sensing product development, analysis, and hypothesis testing of wildfires in northwestern boreal North America. The postdoctoral researcher will leverage past and current workflows to map forest and fire properties at 30 m resolution, estimate individual climate forcings, and test hypotheses related to fire self-regulation and climate feedbacks in boreal ecosystems. This position is part of a larger multi-institution project to understand the mechanisms and consequences of fire-fuel-climate feedbacks in interior Alaska and the Northwest Territories, Canada. The successful candidate would join a vibrant Arctic research team including field scientists, remote sensing scientists, process modelers, and policy experts.

Responsibilities:

  • Leveraging some preliminary workflows, use the Landsat series of satellites to map forest and fire properties, including forest stress, burned area, fire severity, rate of spread, lightning frequency, and fire weather, at 30 m across several boreal ecoregions.
  • Build on existing methods to map 30 m fire-climate forcings, including land surface albedo and emissions of greenhouse gasses and aerosols.
  • Work with project team members to test hypotheses related to the mechanisms and consequences of fire self-regulation in boreal forests.
  • Lead manuscript preparation and publication.
  • Present results at relevant conferences and meetings.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (granted or expected soon) in Earth System Science, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Geography, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate large geospatial data sets, develop and apply statistical models including machine learning, and to test statistical hypotheses.
  • Experience using satellite remote sensing data, particularly Landsat.
  • Knowledge of boreal forests, wildfire, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of publication in scientific journals.
  • Ability to lead a research project and independently develop new directions while also being part of a highly collaborative team.

Application review will begin on January 14, 2021 and will be ongoing until the opportunity is closed.

Desired Start Date: May 1, 2022.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The annual salary range is $65,000 - $68,000. This is a two and a half year fixed-term appointment with the potential to extend depending on performance and funding. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and work life balance.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts (remote work location is feasible)

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Woodwell

WE NEED ALL VOICES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our lifetimes. Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell) understands that the climate crisis—from causes to consequences—is inextricably linked with persistent social injustice. Effectively addressing either requires addressing both. The climate crisis demands that we bring to bear all of the knowledge, expertise, innovation, and creativity that we can collectively muster, and those who have been marginalized and disproportionately impacted must be heard.

The work Woodwell does—the questions we ask, the ways we seek answers, and the strategies we put forward—is stronger when shaped by a diversity of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences. We strive to welcome, respect, and amplify differing voices. We value individuals as they are, with all their differences in race, age, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, language, and mental and physical abilities.

Woodwell acknowledges that our organization, and the scientific community more broadly, have a long way to go in living up to these ideals. We approach the work of improving our organization with the same ambition and commitment to systemic change that we bring to addressing climate change.

We will inevitably make mistakes, but we will continue to listen, learn, and do this critical work. We understand that this work requires an ongoing commitment from each and every one of us. We are actively engaged in building and sustaining an equitable and inclusive culture within our organization, and in fostering greater diversity in climate science.
