Description: The Climate Analytics Group (https://aub.ie/ClimateAnalytics) in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences at Auburn University is looking for Ph.D. students interested in climate data science and impact modeling. The perspective student will have the opportunity to conduct research on understanding and predicting of climate indicators, extreme climate events and their impacts on water, food, and ecosystems using data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and process-based modeling approaches combining with emerging climate/earth system data generated by sensors, satellites, numerical simulations, etc. The work will inform decision making, climate adaptations and resilience actions in food and agricultural systems, ecosystems, and water resources, and interact with stakeholders at regional or national scales (e.g., climate prediction center, agricultural community, coastal community, federal emergency management agency). Current research activities in the group are funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Alabama Center of Excellence (ALCOE).

Qualifications: Applicants must have a MS or BS in a science or engineering field (such as hydrology, meteorology, climate/earth science, environmental science or engineering, agricultural and biological engineering, geography, computer science, statistics, physics, or related fields) at the time the PhD program begins. Deserving candidates should have strong commitment and motivation to study climate/hydrologic issues using statistics, machine learning, process-based models (e.g., climate models, hydrologic models, land surface models) and multi-dimensional data, have experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, etc.), and possess or demonstrate a potential for excellent written and verbal communication skills.
