Senior Earth Scientist - Climate Modeler

The Opportunity

Help shape the direction of one of the world’s newest and most ambitious climate modeling enterprises! At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division (ASGC) is a strong and established team that covers a vast breadth and depth of climate and global change research. There is currently an opening for a mid-to senior career scientist with extensive climate modeling expertise and experience. As a leader at PNNL, you’ll build your career, your contacts, and your research portfolio with the assistance of professional support staff, encouraging and flexible management, and a robust portfolio of climate modeling projects and opportunities. Both independently and in collaboration with world-class scientists at PNNL and partner institutions, you will provide leadership to projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, such as the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). You will also lead and support strategic planning of new programs, interface directly with program managers, and facilitate close relationships with regional, national and international scientific institutions for collaborations and partnerships.

The Ideal Candidate

Specifically, we’re looking for candidates who are internationally recognized in the development and application of the atmospheric component of global Earth system models to gain new insights into the climate system and to address key climate science questions. Expertise in linking models with observations and application of artificial intelligence to address key science challenges related to aerosols, clouds, numerical methods, and/or atmosphere-surface interactions is desirable. In this role, you will be expected to lead and contribute to projects spanning multiple institutions as well as provide strategic leadership of PNNL’s atmospheric modeling efforts; therefore, superior collaboration and communication skills are desired. A strong and impactful publication record and experience in effectively leading large, diverse teams are essential. Demonstrated success in proposal writing is also highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS/BA with 7 years of experience
• MS/MA with 5 years of experience
• PhD with 3 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in climate science or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience as a climate scientist or similar role.
• A demonstrated track record of obtaining research funding through successful proposal development, building relationships with funding agencies, and/or other means.
• National recognition (via awards, lecture invitations, or other honors) in climate/Earth system modeling arena with an emphasis on atmospheric modeling.
• Expertise in aerosols, clouds, numerical methods, atmosphere-surface interactions, or related research areas.
• A substantial record of independent contributions to research programs.
• Experience in technical and project leadership roles.
• Superior collaboration and communication skills.
• The ability to lead dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and manage complex projects that may span multiple institutions beyond PNNL.
• A demonstrated record of strong leadership qualities, team building and motivation skills, and project management, as well as a proven commitment to the mentoring and development of junior scientific staff.
