Summer 2022 'Soils' Internship in Alaska with CRREL-AKRO
Location: Fairbanks, AK (travel stipend to and from appointee’s home location can be negotiated)
Pay: $22-35/hour (based on experience)
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Duration: Summer 2022 (dates flexible)
The CRREL-AKRO team is looking to hire a summer 2022 soils intern to assist in a variety of research projects with a concentration in soils-based laboratory experiments and field work. The intern can expect to assess the geochemical composition of soils, minerals, and contaminant-affected environmental systems. The primary project focus will be the remediation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in groundwater using mineral-based soil amendments. In addition, the intern will assist in various field projects in Interior Alaska including geophysical data collection and permafrost soil sampling.
Required Qualifications:
- Undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related field or 2 years of industry-related experience
- 1 year of post-graduate school education (Master’s or Ph.D.) or 1 year of geology-based field experience
- Ability to cross difficult terrain (tundra, wetland, etc.) on foot, lift up to 50 pounds, and spend up to 8 hours outdoors in various Alaskan conditions (cold, wet, mosquitos)
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite, specifically Excel
- Demonstrated commitment to contributing to an inclusive work environment
- U.S. Citizen
- Proof of COVID-19 Vaccine
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge or passing coursework relating to geology, chemistry, or other hard sciences
- Working knowledge of soils, minerals, and relevant analytical instrumentation, including but not limited to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and/or X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)
