Organizational Unit Overview

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment (DGPE) is one of 16 departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. The department has a diverse group of 14 faculty members and offers BS degrees in Geography, Geographic Information Science and Technology, Applied Atmospheric Science, and Community and Regional Planning, as well as an MS in Geography and a new online MS in Planning and Development that will start in Fall 2022. The department offers a collegial and supportive work environment for faculty with varied interests and research agendas.

DGPE is home to the GIS Science Center and has a strong commitment to inter-disciplinary research ( Faculty members collaborate with researchers across the campus community, including the Water Resources Center (, the Brody School of Medicine Center for Health Disparities (, the Center for Natural Hazards Research (, and interdisciplinary graduate programs in Integrated Coastal Sciences, Security Studies and International Studies. In addition, ECU’s Integrated Coastal Programs ( and the facilities of the university’s Outer Banks Campus near Manteo, NC ( offer unique opportunities for research, instruction and outreach. Faculty are actively engaged in research as evidenced by their robust publication records in well-respected journals and grants from private, state, and federal organizations.

East Carolina University (, a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University and enrolls around 29,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 95,000 with a metropolitan population of over 170,000), which lies 90 miles east of Raleigh and 80 miles from the Atlantic coast. A thriving small city and regional center for education, health, and the arts, Greenville is a great place to live, work, play, and visit. It has a cost of living more than 10 percent below the national average and boasts a vibrant Uptown district with restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Job Duties              

The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment (DGPE) at East Carolina University invites applications for the position of Associate Professor or Professor and Chair to begin July 1, 2022. This is a 12-month, leave-earning position. In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities for all, the Department actively encourages members from all underrepresented groups in higher education to submit applications.

The Chair will provide effective administrative and intellectual leadership for the department.  Responsibilities include facilitating strategic planning and resource allocation; promoting excellence in faculty research and teaching; mentoring faculty and students; fostering faculty members’ efforts to secure external funding; ensuring quality, integrity, and growth of student degree programs; supporting departmental, college, and university policies and standards; fostering collegial relations in departmental governance; and effectively representing the department to internal and external constituents.

The Chair will teach regularly in the department and maintain an active research agenda.

This position is contingent upon available funding.

Minimum Education/Experience       

Qualifications for the position include: (1) a Ph.D.  in Geography or a closely related field; (2) a distinguished and sustained record of scholarly publications and productivity, commensurate to an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; (3) demonstrated excellence in teaching and service; (4) administrative experience or evidence of management skills commensurate with leadership in a disciplinarily wide-ranging department; and (5) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
