Purpose 

Applicants are requested for a Senior Distinguished R&D Staff position to lead and execute research related to energy-economic analyses including; economic analyses of net-zero emissions pathways, financing needs for the energy system transformation, macroeconomic and energy market impacts of future global scenarios, energy sector planning, and end-use sector technology adaptation such as electrification (transport, buildings, industry), and sustainable energy development analytics (including economic inter-dependencies). Advancing energy-economic modeling and policy analyses to inform state, national (developed and developing), and global energy and environmental issues are paramount. The candidate is expected to assist with the development and leading of existing and new research programs focused on these areas.

Candidates should have a demonstrated record of technical accomplishment in the fields of; 1) electricity and transportation smart mobility econometrics, 2) economic modeling and policy analyses of oil markets and biofuels, 3) energy security and strategic economic analysis and policy at global scales, and 4) energy technology decision analyses for sustainable green economy. These research areas align well with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), National Security, and other DOE programs requiring advanced energy economics R&D.

 

The position is in the Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis Group (EREA) of ORNL’s Environmental Sciences Division (ESD), and research will be conducted at the ORNL main campus. The candidate is expected to collaborate with staff across multiple divisions at ORNL and will serve as a subject matter expert and technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings, as well as when interfacing with other national labs, industry, and universities. In addition, the candidate will need to mentor younger staff in ESD and also provided leadership and support for new program development activities.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in the energy economics integrated with energy policy development in the areas delineated above.
  • Mentor young staff in EREA/ESD in technical and program development areas.
  • Provide leadership in assisting the EREA in pursuing new program development activities including forming collaborations and writing proposals.
  • Collaborate with scientists across ORNL and within the Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section to establish and direct impactful research programs.
  • Work closely with the Group (EREA) and Division (ESD) research staff on related sustainable energy policy and economics R&D.
  • Support the publishing goals of ORNL.

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in economics, political science, or related discipline with a minimum of 25 years of experience in energy economics and energy policy R&D. 
  • Established reputation in oil market macroeconomics, transportation energy economics, smart mobility approaches, and advanced economic analyses to inform energy sector policy at local, regional, national, and global scales.
  • Demonstrated relevant publication record in peer-reviewed journal articles and/or energy economic and policy national/international committees.
  • Excellence in program development, and project and team management.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
