The Atmospheres Node (ATM) of NASA’s Planetary Data System (PDS), located in the Astronomy Department at New Mexico State University (NMSU), is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to provide technical and computational expertise to support our archiving efforts, including a new initiative to develop a data annex that would support the archiving of atmospheric model outputs.

ATM is responsible for the acquisition, preservation, and distribution of all non-imaging atmospheric data from all planetary missions (excluding Earth observations), supporting ground-based observations, and planetary analog laboratory and field measurements. The primary goal of the node is to preserve and make available to the research community the highest quality data possible, serving as the interface between data providers, long-term data storage facilities, and data users.

The PDS-ATM Data Scientist roles and responsibilities include the development of data archive pipelines and archiving standards for atmospheric models; providing expertise in model formats/outputs, storage and management of model output in cloud storage; and interacting with various atmospheric modeling communities.

Required experience, skills, and qualifications include familiarity and experience with: atmospheric science data processing, use of data archives for research, atmospheric science imaging and/or spectroscopic data, modern software and programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with Linux operating systems. Desired experience, skills, and qualifications include familiarity and experience with large data sets and associated analysis methods, cloud computing, atmospheric modeling codes, and data science methods such as machine learning. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.

Education/ Experience:

Experience in astronomical/planetary/atmospheric science research or data scientist/support functions is required.

A PhD degree or equivalent in Astronomy, Planetary Science, Atmospheric Science, Physics, or a related field is required.
