Impossible Sensing develops next-generation optical sensing applications for deployment and operation in the most extreme terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. We're looking for candidates interested in projects ranging from planetary exploration to deep ocean survey to join our growing team in St. Louis, MO.

 

THE POSITION

The Systems Engineer works with a multi-disciplinary team designing, building and testing leading-edge sensor systems destined for NASA Solar System projects as well as deep-sea marine applications to reduce causes of climate change. The Systems Engineer (SE) will function within daily laboratory operations at the St. Louis facility. Top candidates will be technically agile, have an ability to learn and implement novel and innovative procedures effectively and have a sound understanding of relevant scientific approaches. The SE works onsite with our team at our St. Louis, MO headquarters on a dedicated SETI/NASA joint venture Space project. The SE will be initially employed for the first 9 months as a consultant to Impossible Sensing through The SETI Foundation. After the successful completion of the project, there is a strong likelihood for the SE to be hired on as a full time Impossible Sensing employee working on further off-planet and deep-sea marine projects.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take space hardware requirements and desirements and translate those into a design for hardware that will fly on missions to explore the solar system

  • Start-to-finish hardware ownership: Specification, architecture, design, simulation, analysis, prototyping, manufacturing, validation and verification testing and final hardware acceptance

  • Collaborate with electrical, reliability, program management, mechanical, and management teams

  • Be the technical lead for smaller projects and assist in leading larger projects over the entire project lifecycle from concept generation in the proposal stage to testing your creations in Space or on the ocean floor

  • Be the technical lead for project life cycle reviews such as design reviews, PDR and CDR reviews, to ensure the project accomplishes the technical objectives within time and budget

  • Travel as needed to support integration and testing tasks at customer or field sites

  • Help develop new concepts, white papers, proposals, and briefings

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • US Person (Citizen or Permanent Resident)

  • 2-5 years hardware systems engineering experience

  • Experience in marine engineering inclusive of proposal drafting, requirements definition,

    systems design, relevant simulations and calculations, hardware assembly and testing, documenting and reporting.

 

 

DESIRED WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Exceptional organization/documentation and communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Ability to independently identify issues and collectively work out a solution

  • Proficiency with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, electronic loads, signal generators, etc)

  • Basic programming ability (Python, C, C++, Java, etc)

  • Knowledge of aerospace design requirements

  • Start-Up Mentality with rigor of established large-scale business practices

  • Ability to reliably commute to the STL job location
