Lecturer – Atmospheric Science

 

The Atmospheric and Earth Science (AES) Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has been ranked in the top ten by the Chronicle of Higher Education based on faculty research productivity index. It is co-located with UAH’s Earth System Science Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Earth Science Branch, and the National Weather Service (NWS), all of which are located in the National Space Science Technology Center (NSSTC), enabling students to get a unique collaborative research and education experience. A cross-cutting theme of the Department is the development and application of geospatial analytical methods and remote sensing technology to Earth Science disciplines. These include land use/land cover change, severe weather, climate, human adaptation, lightning instrumentation, numerical modeling and data assimilation, satellite remote sensing, air pollution, urban studies, natural disasters, and environmental policy and decision-making.

 

Within the NSSTC facility, multiple NASA Applied Earth Science Programs (such as SERVIR, DEVELOP, SPoRT, IMPACT) have active research programs and employ dozens of University scientists. The Remote Sensing teaching lab is equipped with 30 workstations used primarily for teaching GIS, scientific programming, and satellite data processing. Additional resources available for faculty include instrumentation and mobile radars/lidars housed in the adjoining Severe Weather Institute – Radar and Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL), multiple computing labs, equipped student research spaces, and mobile computing resources. The Department has fifteen full-time faculty, over 20 adjunct/affiliate faculty, over 50 graduate students, and more than 100 undergraduates.

 

The AES Department at the UAH invites applications for a non-tenure track faculty position with the rank of Lecturer beginning Fall 2022. Applicants must have an M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in Atmospheric science. Technical knowledge of dynamic, thermodynamic, synoptic meteorology and weather forecasting methods is required. Knowledge or experience in geographic information systems and satellite and/or airborne remote sensing is desired but not required. Excellent communication skills and prior teaching experience are essential. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 3- or 4-course load in Atmospheric science classes per academic semester during the Fall and Spring. The candidate will work to maintain the AES Department’s close collaboration with the NWS Forecast Office in Huntsville, and help integrate NWS forecast systems and methods into classroom curriculum and lab exercises. When the Lecturer is not engaged in the teaching during the academic year, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with UAH, NASA, and NWS scientists and participate in funded research programs in the NSSTC.
