Ph.D. position in Geodynamics at the University of Miami

A Ph.D. assistantship is available in the Geodynamics group at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (University of Miami). Starting Fall 2022 or Spring 2023, the successful applicant will investigate the dynamics of Western Pacific subduction zones using state-of-the-art numerical modeling techniques. Global models, tailored to various geological and geophysical observables, will be used to constrain: i) the style of mantle flow beneath the Western Pacific, and ii), the strength of mechanical interactions between Western Pacific subduction zones and global-scale mantle convection. For a brief overview of currently active research areas in the UM Geodynamics group, see: https://adamfholt.github.io/research.

Application

Students with backgrounds in a quantitative discipline (geoscience, physics, engineering, etc.), a strong academic record, and prior Geophysics/Geodynamics research experience are encouraged to apply. If interested, please reach out to the Geodynamics group head, Dr. Adam Holt (aholt@miami.edu), with a short CV and brief statement of interest. Detailed information on the application procedure can be found at https://graduate.rsmas.miami.edu/admissions/application-information/index.html.

Rosenstiel School, University of Miami

The successful applicant will become a member of the Department of Marine Geosciences (MGS) within the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. MGS is home to faculty with a wide range of research focuses (Geodesy, Seismology, Geology, Geochemistry) and is located on the picturesque Rosenstiel School campus (Virginia Key, Miami). The Ph.D. assistantship provides 5 years of full support: salary, tuition, and health insurance.
