Postdoctoral Associate, ARC Applied Research Center

The Applied Research Center is currently seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate in Hydrological and Contaminant Transport modeling to join our team of professionals:

 

Job Description

 

FIU has an opening for an enthusiastic and motivated Post-Doctoral Associate to join the Applied Research Center’s (ARC) Modeling and GIS team. We are looking for a team player that is able to conduct research on projects focused on understanding the role of hydrological variability on contaminant transport of heavy metals in current and future climate for various US Department of Energy (DOE) research site locations. This work is funded by the DOE-FIU Cooperative Agreement between the US Department of Energy and Florida International University. As such, the candidate will collaborate closely with various colleagues within ARC, FIU and at various DOE National Laboratories. The ideal candidate should: 1) be able to develop and utilize hydrological and/or contaminant transport models for environmental management and planning, 2) have coding and data management skills to handle various sources of data, 3) be able to conceptualize, organize and summarize results as part of regular reports and within the scientific literature.

 

Duties

 

  • Perform research using commercial (DHI MIKE software) and open-source (Amanzi-ATS) models of surface, subsurface and groundwater hydrology and contaminant transport; Possess coding skills (e.g. Python, R, C++) to obtain and analyze various sources of data, and evaluate/visualize in GIS Conduct field research which involves but is not limited to collection of water, soil or sediment samples; Analyze and summarize data, present at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals; Be a team-player and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment; Train, supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; Participate in the development of proposals for additional funding in relevant research areas; Assist in the development of publications, technical reports, monthly, quarterly and year end reports; 
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

 

 

Required Qualifications

 

Post-Doctoral Associate Program is designed to recruit outstanding applicants to assist the organization in meeting its objectives. Applicant should have a Ph.D. in civil/environmental engineering, environmental science, biogeochemistry, or related discipline. The position requires background and experience in hydrological and contaminant transport modeling, coding skills, as well as publications in highly respected international journals. This assignment is grant funded, and the appointment may be renewed at management’s discretion based on excellent work performance and funding availability.

 

 

 

Desired Qualification and Departmental Qualifications

 

Background/experience to interpret and work with environmental/geochemistry information and software, and/or additional experience in remote sensing is a plus
