Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Hawaiʻi Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa (UHM). Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES:  Works closely with a diverse group of investigators (geophysics, hydrogeology, petrophysics, environmental science, environmental engineering, geochemistry) working to characterize the geologic structures that are impacting rate and direction of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL)/contaminant and groundwater flow in confined and unconfined aquifers, and the development of a detailed conceptual site model of a region of Oahu that is at risk of contamination to its primary water supply.  Funding will be sought for expansion of these investigations to include the aquifers of Oahu and the other Hawaiian Islands as well as other Pacific Island nations. Designs, conducts and coordinates geophysical field research programs and projects. This specifically includes research into aquifer systems and the assessment of groundwater resources. Designs and manages all aspects of geophysical field work related to the research objectives, in particular the use of seismic data capture methods. Designs data requirements and conducts data verification, data analysis/modeling and data interpretation. Conducts inverse and forward modeling of groundwater geophysical exploration datasets and provides geological interpretation. Prepares scientific manuscripts and reports based on the results of field program.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING

PhD from an accredited college or university in Geophysics, Earth Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in design and execution of field seismic programs associated with delineating and characterizing subsurface geologic structures.

KNOWLEDGE

State of the art knowledge of seismic wave propagation and shallow imaging techniques, including ambient noise tomography, and mathematical modeling systems for seismic data interpretation and analysis.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to test and deploy geophysical field equipment and verify data collection. Ability to manage resources, schedules, and personnel to effectively and efficiently complete research projects. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Experience with the application of seismic methods to understanding complex hydrogeologic environments. Experience in the application of seismology to imaging and mapping geologic structures in volcanic/fractured crystalline rock/karst environments; ability to successfully design and execute reflection/refraction field surveys as well as seismic ambient noise surface wave tomography of shallow (<1-2 km) geologic structures/contacts; ability to process and interpret relevant data streams and provide written reports of findings.  Familiarity or experience with geophysical methods including: magnetotellurics, electrical resistivity, self-potential, borehole logging, gravity, and magnetics. Experience with proposal preparation and collaboration with diverse interdisciplinary groups. Familiarity with Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)/National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulatory requirements.
